This Week at the Firm

This week, the firm handled a dynamic mix of contested court appearances, strategic client counseling for startups, and nuanced intellectual property matters. Here is a look at what we accomplished to drive our clients’ goals forward.

Litigation and Court Appearances

Vigorous advocacy in the courtroom and relentless management of court dockets were central to the firm’s litigation efforts this week:

  • I prepared for and traveled to New Haven Superior Court to argue a second hearing for a motion to dismiss, concurrently managing settlement conference arrangements with opposing counsel.
  • For an ongoing corporate dispute, I engaged in extensive preparation for a Prejudgment Remedy (PJR) hearing. This involved phone calls with the client, preparing and submitting exhibits, and ultimately traveling to attend and argue the PJR hearing in court.
  • I revised a complaint to add a count for declaratory judgments regarding insurance billing. Additionally, I updated the complaint to include a CUTPA claim concerning an Authorized Official listing under an NPI.
  • In another matter, I met with a client regarding discovery, finalized his responses to requests for admissions, served them on opposing counsel, and filed a formal notice of compliance with the court.
  • The firm continually monitored court dockets, noting orders for new pre-trial and PJR dates, and subsequently calendared those dates while notifying the clients.
  • I also filed a notice with the Court regarding repeated last-minute motions to continue by the opposing side.

Corporate Strategy and Startup Counseling

Advising growing businesses requires a balance of legal compliance and strategic foresight:

  • For a startup client, I conducted an initial review of e-mailed questions and provided initial responses regarding the structure and compliance of their platform.
  • This advisory work expanded into reviewing, considering, and replying to nuanced questions about personal data, tax elections, and their LLC operating agreement.
  • I also researched the status of a specific home care company’s NPI, Department of Public Health (DPH) license, and Department of Consumer Protection (DCP) registration.

Intellectual Property and Trademark Work

Protecting our clients’ brand assets and mitigating risk are critical components of our IP practice:

  • I conducted a comprehensive trademark risk assessment for a startup client’s new logo, engaging in detailed correspondence regarding the findings.
  • I successfully reported the formal registration of a trademark to a client and carefully calendared all crucial dates for its future renewal.
  • Conversely, I reported a refusal of registration for another client’s trademark, calendared the necessary date for a response, and advised them on the best strategic approach moving forward.
